Kids International School (KIS)
Kids International School is a private preschool for children between the ages of 2 and 6 years old in Nagakute City, Aichi Prefecture, a heaven of nature. The school provides a safe, positive environment that fosters self-expression, self-esteem, creativity, and curiosity. This is acomplished in a child-orientated environment in which a child feels free to question, research and predict real life concepts that interest them through play, theme-based projects and teacher facilitated activities.
At this school, many opportunities are created for international awareness to be developed at an early age, where children can share about their culture and learn about the cultures of those that surround them. In our classrooms, English is used as our language of instruction due to the diversity of our student population. Despite this, a lot of consideration is made towards the fact that each child is unique and has a different pace of language development. We use a carefully designed curriculum to assist each child to reach their full potential in regards to their reading, writing and math development.
Early childhood experiences are very important in laying the foundation for development and learning in school-age children. At Kids International School, our team of certified early childhood teachers, and parents work together to support the development of the children and their desire to learn.
KIS Philosophy
I love me. I love you.
I love the world.
I am proud of myself.
I can listen to you. I can tell you.
This is my choice.
KIS Curriculum
Language
KIS offers a comprehensive English language learning program that includes storytime, dramatic play, vocabulary acquisition, discussions, whole language, phonemic awareness, phonological awareness, spelling, phonics, reading, and writing. Each age group has specific goals tailored to their developmental stages, with some content introduced at more advanced ages as appropriate. At all levels, spoken language, reading, and writing are integrated into daily thematic activities. For children whose native language is Japanese, we provide dedicated English learning time. Non-Japanese native speakers have Japanese classes where they learn through hands-on activities. Our language program incorporates phonics, supported by research in reading and language development.
Math
Math is seamlessly integrated into children’s play and thematic activities, following Piaget’s theory that young children learn best with concrete objects. Each classroom is equipped with materials that encourage exploration and engagement. In the four-year-old class, children begin Mary Baratta-Lawton’s “Math This Way” program, which actively engages them in mathematical concepts and ideas.
Science
Science concepts are taught through themed activities and exploratory play. At KIS, we believe that science, where children question, predict, and investigate the world around them, is a crucial part of their development.
Social Studies
At KIS, we believe understanding the world begins with self-awareness. We create an environment that gradually introduces children to the wider world, helping them recognize and value both the material and natural aspects around them and appreciate similarities and differences.
Social and Emotional Development
Social and emotional development is fostered through interactions with the environment and others. This development helps children listen properly and build good friendships, laying the foundation for future schooling. At KIS, we encourage these skills through play and by setting positive examples.
Physical Development
Physical development at KIS is emphasized through outdoor play and activities that encourage children to be active. Our facilities include a playground, fields for planting and harvesting, flower beds, and four nearby parks. The fields, chestnut trees, and bamboo groves behind KIS provide an ideal setting for afternoon walks and exploration.
Music
Children at KIS enjoy daily singing and dancing. Our weekly music classes help develop their expressive abilities through music and tailored activities. Children enjoy music by clapping their hands to the rhythm, moving their bodies to the tune of the music, and playing instruments. Once a month, our music director, Ms. Kimiko Hiramatsu, and Ms. Yukari Oka, our music instructor and a graduate of Aichi University of Education with a specialization in Eurhythmics, conduct special music classes. These sessions include reading picture books with musical backgrounds, allowing children to connect music with their imagination.
Art
Arts and crafts are a daily part of play and group activities at KIS. Teachers encourage creativity and originality, providing materials like paper, clay, paint, origami, and weaving tools. Art activities are designed to expand curiosity and creativity, tying together various curriculum areas.
Cooking
Our fully equipped kitchen allows children to experience the joy of creating their own food. Cooking activities connect to other curriculum areas, such as literacy, art, math, and science, providing a holistic learning experience.
KIS School Life
Our Teachers
All of the teachers at Kids International School are certified teachers and nursery school teachers in their native countries. They assist children to maximize their learning based on child psychology and development. All teachers have a strong sense of mission, with a deep love and patience for children. Our teachers are always willing to continue their own educational journey in order to provide an exceptional learning environment.
Early Childhood Educator
I believe in the words "Learn through play". We provide a fun and comfortable environment for the students. If the students tell me at the end of the day "I had fun today", this enlightens me very much!Everything happens for a reason, whether they appear meaningless to others. I wish our school will bring you and your child/children something meaningful to your life. Thank you for visiting our web site!
(Curriculum Coordinator)
(Nursery Teacher)
I have had many years’ experiences working with children, from coaching sports to working in the classroom. I have taught learners from the age of 4 years to 9 years. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education and Foundation Phase. I knew from a very young age that I wanted to be a teacher, my first teaching experience was when I was 7 years of age, I would teach my teddy bears. I believe teaching is a passion and it is not a career that you choose but rather one that chooses you.
Ever since I was little, I dreamt of becoming a teacher, and now I am very happy to be working at KIS. I will work hard to build a trusting relationship with the children and develop a childcare program that makes children happy and excited every day. I also want to interact and join the children in their activities. I am looking forward to growing together with the children.
I am very glad to be able to support the childrenʼs growth as a member of KIS. I believe that children are naturally curious and motivated to learn new things. I want to create an environment in which children can discover fun things and explore their interests freely. I also want to learn various things from children and grow together with them.
I believe that as educators we are responsible in equipping our leaners to become their best self. I will accept that every individual is unique in their own way. Therefore, I will ensure that the learning environment is catered for all learning needs and that every individual is given the chance to explore and grow. I understand that learning entails strong professional relationships and I want to be able to implement this in my classroom.
I love children. Here at KIS, I'm looking forward to being a part of the children's life as a teacher. My dream is to become a good teacher that can help my students be happy. I'm willing to improve my skills, learning with children and I cherish the time I can spend with everyone.
I have many years of experience working with children in different environments such as teaching ages between 3 and 8, assisting with mini cricket coaching, and with high school girls in a boarding establishment. I have my Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education and Foundation Phase. I was also lucky enough to have spent almost 2 years studying in Perth, Australia, where I worked part time at a daycare. Although I achieved my studies later in life, teaching young children has always been my biggest passion and I am fortunate enough to get to pursue this. My aim is to always create a positive, safe and fun learning environment where my children feel a sense of belonging, and a solid foundation for lifelong learning.
I have been dreaming about being a teacher since I was an elementary student. Now my dream came true and I am here at KIS. I am so glad to be here. I am very happy to see the children’s shining eyes and smiling faces and also to hear their laughter. I always try to know what they see and what they feel and I try to see it and feel it with them. Also I try to know what they are interested in and what they want to do , so we can do it together and have fun together. I believe that children grow much when they have fun and they are involved in something. As the children grow, I hope to continue growing as a teacher as well.
My dream was to be a teacher since I was a child and now I'm really glad to work at KIS. By seeing the world through children’s eyes I will understand their interests and concerns and I can share their joy when they achieve something. In daily life, I want to support them by considering how the children are feeling. I try to provide an environment that children can feel happy and comfortable in.
I am a certified Early Childhood Educator. I have taught preschoolers at an American International School in Uganda, and at an English school for kids in Osaka. I am always amazed by the great learning potential in all children. I believe that children thrive best when they see themselves as part of a caring community with other learners, their teachers and their families. This is the most important goal to me as an early childhood educator. In my classes, I endeavour to create an engaging learning environment that promotes learning through play, based on concrete experiences.
MUSIC Director of KIS
Research shows that exposure to quality music in early childhood nurtures children's ability to listen, feel and express beats and rhythms in their bodies, and enrich their sensitivity. In addition, learning how to follow the directions of the instructor, playing a variety of instruments and matching sounds with friends, encourages coordination and a sense of pride in their accomplishments. Under the advice of Ms. Yukari (graduate of the Music Department of Aichi University of Education), a specialist in children's music education, we provide activities that can be enjoyed immediately with our original programs designed for the developmental stages of young children.
Voices
I feel that the weekly cooking and science activities are enriching, and the fresh experiences each day are nourishing for my child's growth. The teachers always speak to the children in English, helping them develop and improve their language skills smoothly. Both parents and children are supported by teachers who are willing to work together with us to solve our problems and make us happy.
Ms. M.T. (2024)
The teachers always supported my son who had difficulties with daily activities, waited patiently until he was motivated, and thanks to their many encouragements, he was able to experience the joy of success. I think he has gradually gained confidence in himself. My son, who loves transportation, was happy to have the opportunity to ride the N-bus and the subway.
Ms. M.N. (2024)
My son has been attending the school since he was one year old. He has been able to grow up in a carefree environment because the teachers have respected him as a “person” from an early age and watch him grow. I feel that my child is learning not only English as a language, but also international ways of thinking and seeing things through play and activities. It has been helping him to develop a rich ability to think creatively and compassionately.
Ms. R.N. (2024)
One of my fondest memories of KIS is painting the playhouse in the playground. The English skills I acquired at KIS helped me a lot. I was able to get good scores on both the English Proficiency Test and TOEIC without any difficulty, and, as a university student, I can confidently serve foreign customers at my part-time job. Most of my customers praise me for my English skills. In the future, I want to be able to give my children the same education and experience that my parents gave me.
Mr. J.M. (Graduated 2011)
We have been part of KIS since 2014, this was the year we enrolled our eldest daughter into the school. In 2014 I considered and visited many schools in Nagoya before choosing the KIS. When work brought us back to Japan in 2020, it was without hesitation that I again enrolled my 2 younger daughters into the KIS. All my children have loved their time at the KIS! I have always liked the variety of activities they do with the children, such as the cooking and library days. I believe the words of Fred Donaldson, Ph.D, play researcher, “Children learn as they play. Most importantly, in play children learn how to learn.”
Ms. A.C. (2023)
My daughters who graduated from KIS and are now over 20 years old. They say that their time at KIS has become an important part of who they are because of the respect that was given to them, others, their ideas, and their opinions, all in an English environment that encourages and challenges the children. I am very fortunate to have found KIS at the beginning of their lives.
