Saturday Class is an immersion class that offers a variety of activities on Saturdays from 10:00 to 14:00, four hours of solid immersion in an English-only environment. One of the main “theme activities” is centered around a single theme, where students learn about that theme from a variety of angles.

In the Saturday class, theme activities are held in the afternoon. Through the activities, students gain knowledge and use English as a tool to develop their management skills.
For example, the theme for August was “buoyancy. As an introduction, we learned the words “sink” and “float. The instructor showed the students familiar objects in the classroom, such as glue sticks, pens, erasers, and paper clips, and the students guessed which one would be which and wrote it down on a piece of paper. The instructor then asked the students, “Which is more buoyant?” and put the familiar objects into a container of water. Rather than explaining, the experiment is done first, creating an opportunity for children to understand visually.

In the following week we learned the word ‘dense’ and experimented with five liquids (dish detergent, honey, milk, syrup, and oil) poured into plastic bottles to create layers. The students were intrigued by the differences in the weight of the liquids. The instructor asked the students “Which is more dense?”, stimulating their inquisitive minds to think and predict based on their own experiences and to want to know the answer. Afterwards, screws, beads, popcorn seeds, plastic bottle lids, and ping pong balls were dropped into the completed “Density Tower Bottle” to see which ones would fall to which layer. By using familiar objects, participants were able to have a more concrete image. Then, when the instructor asked “What do you think?” and “Anybody want to guess?”, the students responded “I think the ping-pong ball will float!”, “I don’t know about the bead….” The opinions were varied. Encouraging dialogue with the instructor helps to improve understanding and interest in learning.

The third week incorporated a STEAM-type game. We broke into teams and made boats out of aluminum foil and predicted how many one yen coins would fit on the boat.” We need a wall.””Let’s use some tapes here.””I think this will hold more than 35 The students will develop communication and problem-solving skills as they work together to build a boat, predict the number of coins, and arrive at their own team’s answer.

Experiments and other hands-on understanding of learning through theme activities lead to effective learning, and children are able to actively participate in the program. The environment in which they can express their thoughts and feelings is one of the attractions of Saturday classes.
